Lohri (ਲੋਹੜੀ) is the Punjabi winter festival, on 13 January in most years.

Families light a bonfire, share til, gur, rewri and peanuts, and sing and dance. The biggest Lohri is a first Lohri: for a new baby, or for a couple after their wedding. A gift with their name on it is a way to remember the night.

What happens on Lohri

Lohri marks the end of the coldest days of winter. At night, family and friends gather around a bonfire. They throw til, gur, peanuts and popcorn into the fire, share sweets, and dance bhangra and giddha.

Children go from door to door singing “Sundar mundriye”, a song about Dulla Bhatti, a Punjabi hero remembered for helping poor girls get married.
